The IELTS Listening component consists of 4 sections with a total duration of 30 minutes plus extra 10 minutes to transfer the answers to answer sheet. The candidate has to answer 40 questions based on the recordings and each question carries one mark. It is very important to carefully listen and focus on the information being presented. Please note that the recordings are played just once so it is important to be attentive. The listening component includes both monologues and dialogues that focus on social and academic contexts and the questions are usually based on the main ideas, views of the speaker, opinions etc. The nature of the questions range from multiple-choice, matching, summary completion, sentence completion, map or diagram labelling, flow chart, short answer questions.
