IELTS Speaking

The speaking module for both IELTS Academic and General are the same. It consists of a face-to-face interview/discussion with an examiner. The total duration of the speaking test is between 11 and 14 minutes. It is important not to have any ready-made answers instead make your communication as realistic as possible. Remember, a natural and spontaneous way of communication will be effective. Try to be clear, accurate and fluent.

There are three parts in the speaking section that is explained below.

Part I

In Part I, the candidate is expected to speak about his or her life. Questions are generally based on the life and experience of the candidates. Some sample topics are: Study, Work, Town or City, Holiday, Shopping, Neighbourhood, Reading, Sports etc.

Questions with Sample Answers for Part I | Topic: Children

What activities did you do when you were a child?
I used to spend a lot of time outside when I was a child. I would explore the neighborhood, go on hikes with my family, and play sports with my friends. I was always very active and loved being outdoors.

Are all children born with the same talent for things?
No, all children are not born with the same talent for things. Some children may be born with a natural ability for certain things, but others may have to work harder to develop those skills. All children are unique and have different strengths and weaknesses. If we all had the same talent, life would be boring, wouldn’t it. We wouldn’t appreciate special talent.

How do schools support talented children?
Schools can support talented children by providing them with opportunities to develop their skills. This can include things like after-school clubs, special classes, or even working with outside organizations. Schools can also help talented children by providing resources and support to help them reach their full potential.

How do TV advertisements influence children?
TV advertisements influence children in both positive and negative ways. On the positive side, ads can introduce kids to new products and ideas that they may be interested in. They can also teach kids about things like healthy eating and exercise. On the negative side, ads can be very persuasive, and children may end up wanting things that they don’t really need after they watch advertisements on TV. Older children may even become obsessed by things they have seen in TV advertisements and it can affect their mental health.

What positive advice should parents give children these days?
Every family is different, and every child is unique. However, some general positive advice parents could give their children would be to encourage them to be curious and explore the world around them. It is also important to instill a sense of empathy in children so they can understand and respect others. Do children follow parental advice? Sometimes yes and other times no, but parents should always give the best advice for their children even if they might not follow it. It’s also vital to give children lots of positive feedback when they do well. It’s also vital to learn how to give negative feedback in a constructive manner.

Questions with Sample Answers for Part I | Topic: Work

What would you say is your greatest achievement in your job?
My greatest achievement in my job has been to lead my team through a difficult transition while maintaining our high level of customer service. When I was promoted to manager, the team was struggling and morale was low. I worked hard to get to know each employee and understand their strengths, and then I restructured the team to play to those strengths. The result was a happier and more productive team, and our customer satisfaction ratings remained among the highest in the company.

What are the most challenging / interesting aspects of your job?
The most challenging aspects of my job are the constant changes. Every day is a new learning experience, and I never know what I will need to face. It’s exciting to be constantly pushed out of my comfort zone, and I love the challenge of finding innovative ways to solve problems. Every day is also different, which keeps things interesting. No two days are ever the same, so I’m never bored. I really enjoy working on various projects and tasks and not having to do the same thing day in and day out. It keeps me engaged and motivated.

Do you like working overtime?
I don’t really like working overtime, but sometimes it is necessary. For example, if we have a lot of deadlines to meet or if there is a big project that needs to be finished.

What changes would you like to see in your workplace?
I would like to see more communication and collaboration between departments. I think it would make things run more smoothly and efficiently.

How do you deal with difficult co-workers or customers?
I try to stay calm and just do my best. I think it’s important to be professional and respectful, even when the situation is challenging. Although it can be difficult, I think it’s important to keep a positive attitude.

What do you do when you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed at work?
I take a few deep breaths and try to focus on the task at hand. I remind myself that it’s just a temporary situation and that I can get through it.

Part II

In Part II, the candidate is given a topic card. The candidate is allowed to prepare on the topic for a minute. A pencil and paper is provided to make notes. The candidate is supposed to speak for 2 to 3 minutes. It is important to note that the candidate has to speak on the given topic only. The examiner will ask questions based on what you spoke.

Questions with Sample Answers for Part II | Task Card – Happiest Moment

Describe the happiest moment of your life.
– what happened?

and explain what made it the happiest moment of your life.

The happiest moment of my life was when I got engaged to my partner. It was a complete surprise, and it happened on a beautiful sunny day. We were both super happy, and it felt like everything was perfect. It was just the two of us there, and it was such a special moment. I think it was the happiest moment of my life because it was a time when everything felt right, and we were both so in love. It was a moment I will remember forever. My partner and I were out walking in a park near our home. It was a beautiful day, and we were just enjoying each other’s company.

Suddenly, my partner got down on one knee and pulled out a ring. He said some really sweet things and then asked me to marry him. I was overwhelmed with emotion, but of course, I said yes! I was so happy! We hugged and kissed each other. It was a wonderful moment that we both cherish. Later that day, I told my parents about our engagement, and they were thrilled. My father said he always knew I would find someone special, and my mother said she was happy that I had found someone who loved me for who I was.

My parents asked about the wedding plans, and we told them we wanted to keep it small and intimate. We also told them that we would like to have the ceremony and reception at our house. They were both on board with our plans and offered to help in any way they could. My parents are excited to help with the wedding, and we are grateful for their support. We are looking forward to our big day and can’t wait to start our lives together as husband and wife. So that day in the park was the happiest moment of my life – so far!

Follow-up question: How do you think people know when they’re truly happy?

Some signs that you may be happy include feeling contentment, satisfaction, and joy regularly. You may also find yourself smiling and laughing more often than usual. Plus, you may feel like you have an ideal work-life balance and strong relationships with family and friends. If you’re generally happy with your life overall, then it’s likely that you’re truly happy.

Questions with Sample Answers for Part II | Task Card – House / Apartment

Describe a house/apartment you would like to live in, in the future
– where would it be?
– what would it look like?
– why would you want to live there?
and explain how living there would make you feel.

I’d love to live in a house by the beach. It would be a two-story house with a big porch and a backyard. I would want it to be close to the beach so I could go for runs or walks on the beach every day. I think it would make me feel calm and relaxed, and I would love the sound of the waves at night. There’s a beautiful spot on the beach near my hometown that I’ve always loved. It’s called Secret Cove, and it’s a little cove with a sandy beach and cliffs on either side. I think it would be an amazing place to live. The only downside is that it’s so remote, but that’s part of the charm for me. It would make me feel like I’m in my own little world.

Inside, there would be a big open living area with a kitchen and dining area. I would want lots of windows so that the natural light could come in. I would also love to have a fireplace for cozy nights in.There would be two bedrooms, one for me and one for guests. I would want the guest room to be really comfortable so that people would want to stay there.Outside, I would have a big deck overlooking the water. It would be the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the incredible views. I think this kind of house would be the perfect place for me to relax and escape from the world. It would be my own little piece of paradise.

Follow-up question: Do you think you will own such a house/apartment one day?

I would love to own a house or apartment one day. It is definitely something that I am working towards. I think it is important to have a place that you can call your own and feel comfortable in. Plus, it would be great to have a space that I can personalize and make my own. So, yes, I think it’s likely I will own such a house or apartment one day.

Part III

In Part III, the candidate is expected to have a discussion with the examiner based on further questions from Part II. A total duration of 3 – 4 minutes is set for the discussion. This part of the test is designed to give you the opportunity to talk about more abstract issues and ideas.

Questions with Sample Answers for Part III

How can someone develop healthier eating habits?
There are a few ways to develop healthier eating habits. One way is to eat more meals at home instead of going out to eat. Another way is to make sure to include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Lastly, it is important to limit your intake of sugary and fatty foods if you want to have a healthy diet.

What are some consequences of having bad eating habits?
Several consequences can come from having bad eating habits. When people eat a bad diet, they are at a higher risk for developing obesity, type II diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer. Eating poorly can also lead to difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and mood swings. In the long run, bad eating habits can shorten your life expectancy.

What are the three main impacts of globalization on culture?
The three impacts of globalization on culture are homogenization, hybridization, and deterritorialization. Homogenization is the process by which cultures become increasingly similar to each other. Hybridization is the process by which cultures mix and produce new forms. Deterritorialization is the process by which culture is no longer tied to a specific place or territory.
